“Every block of stone has a statue inside it and it is the task of the sculptor to discover it.”

Michael Angelo

A piece of sculpture is always such an interesting subject matter to photograph. My aim, over and above recording the general look of a piece, is to try to give a feeling of its scale and overall mass – to evoke in a two-dimensional image the feeling the artist was attempting in three dimensions.

In late 2014, whilst working for a private collector in Switzerland I had the great pleasure of photographing some incredible Roman marble sculptures. Photographed in situ and placing them on a perfect black background, I was able to isolate them from their surroundings resulting in studio quality images while on location.
